This type of electrode is now by far the most popular type of TENS electrode.
They are far more convenient to use than carbon rubber electrodes and cause
cause fewer skin problems.Reusable electrodes contain one of several self-adhering
conductive gel formulas which provide multiple uses. Manufacturer recommends
5-15 days, though we find in practice patients get up to 6-8 weeks use
with typical use.
Hints for selection:
* Value for money: Use the Re-Ply 654 (#9), Reflex Tantone (#3), Empi 5220,
or Multi-Use 6830(#23) as low cost first choice for most patients. The
Multi-Ply 18204/20204 ( not shown) from Sparta Surgical is a newer alternative
to the Re-Ply 654and seems to give better adhesion and therefore better
in high humidity.
* If patients have sensitive skin or develop sensitivity to other electrodes,
use the Encore Tantone V1060 (#9a), Encore 696 (#18) or Hydrostim 670 (#12).
* If electrodes are not lasting long in hot humid weather, or the patient
perspires excessively, use the Free Form 605 and 615 ( #1 and #2) or Encore
Plus 626 or 627 (#5 and #6). Also consider Clean-Cote or Pre-TENS on page
8.
* If treating areas such as the elbows, hands, feet where there is a lot
of movement, use highly flexible electrodes such as the Free Form 605 and
615 ( #1 and #2) or Encore Plus 626 or 627 (#5 and #6).
* Where seeing a lot of patients in a practice setting for occasional
TENS application and individual hygiene is important, use the Softy 699
(#19) as the individual cost is low.

Electrode Connection Styles
TENS electrodes are offered in several connector styles. Careful consideration
should be given to intended use, placement site, convenience, and comfort.
Pigtail pin connection electrodes are
a popular choice. They are easy to use, flexible, and offer a low profile
which makes them comfortable to wear. They may be difficult to use for
the patient who has limited dexterity. Popular pigtail pin electrodes include
the Reply, Empi 5000 series, Encore, Free-Form
and Multi-Use 6830.
Pin connections are securely held and
also offer a very low profile, but are not as well suited for treatment
sites where flexibility is important or for patients with poor eyesight
who will have difficulty seeing hole for pin. Popular pin connection electrodes
include Reflex, Softy and Multi-Day.
Snap Connections are easily managed by
patients with limited dexterity; however, they may be uncomfortable for
a placement site that will sustain pressure. The snap connection can also
swivel without affecting conduction. Popular snap connection electrodes
include RePly 655 , Encore 693, Multi-Day 646
An offset tab connector is used with a
clip adaptor. Placement site pressure is reduced with this type of connector/adaptor.
Low Back Electrodes
These electrodes offer soft and comfortable foam construction and low profile
designs. They are reusable and feature non-irritating self-adhering solid
gels. Particularly ideal for elderly patients who have back pain but find
standard TENS electrodes hard to use ( a very common problem) , or even
for more able bodied people who just find these electrodes more convenient
to use than standard TENS electrodes.
The cost over time is about the same as standard electrodes. Each electrode
should last about a month, depending on patient's skin type, the climate
and usage.

Multi-Day Electrodes
Multi-Day electrodes are self-adhering, contain a form of non-irritating
gel, and offer convenient one time application. The usage varies from 1
- 5 days. These electrodes are flexible, economical and easy to use. These
electrodes should be considered when it is inconvenient to continually
place and remove electrodes for each application. Patient can shower with
electrodes on ( of course with TENS machine disconnected! ). To dry - just
dab with a towel. The Multi-Day with blue gel is a new electrode designed
for people with particulary sensitive skins.

Carbon rubber electrodes used with conductive pads or gel and tape patches
are still the most cost effective method of using TENS. The 573 Carbon
rubber electrode below is the most popular of the carbon rubber electrodes.
However, all the reusable self-adhering electrodes are more popular due
to ease of use and fewer skin reactions.
Practice Hint: One situation
though when carbon rubber electrodes are definitely preferred is where
the the skin is desquamating ( i.e. flaky). This is common in amputees,
elderly patients, and patients with eczema or varicose ulcers. The problem
with using reusable self-adhering electrodes in patients with this condition
is that the skin comes off in little specks and sticks to the electrodes
gel - forming a barrier. This cause the reusable adhering electrode electrode
to last only a sort time. Of course, another alternative would be to use
the Multi-Day electrodes which are single use, but last a number of days.

TENS Gels
Spectra 360 TENS gel. Recommended for use with TENS, muscle stimulation,
where a salt-free gel is recommended for stimulation. Available in 60g
($4.50 each) and 250 g tubes ($9.00 each). Requires tape
to keep electrodes in place.
Tensive. Replaces Tacgel. Conductive adhesive gel. Special adhesive
properties of gel eliminate need for adhesive tape. Available in 50g tube.
$15 each
TENS Clean-Cote
TENS Clean-Cote is used before applying gels, electrodes, tapes or ostomy
devices. A protective skin dressing, it disinfects, cleans and leaves a
protective coating which shields the skin from adhesives. In addition,
TENS Clean-Cote prevents body oils from being absorbed into the electrode,
thereby extending electrode life.
50/pkt, Only $10
Pre-TENS
with anti-perspirant
Pre-TENS Increases skin adhesion, improves electrode conductivity, reduces
the ocurrence of skin irritation, and extends electrode wearing time. Pre-TENS
is formulated with anti-perspirant to prevent electrode slippage caused
by excessive perspiration or high heat/humidity. The convenient dabo-o-matic
applicator top provides easy application with no waste.
2 ounces, Only $10
Lead Wires, Adaptors & Battery Products
We offer a large variety of lead wires. A complete selection of batteries,
chargers and adaptors are also available.

snap) each
2) 770 Alligator clip convertor each
3) 9 volt alkaline battery each
4) Bifurcating wire ( pin to pin) each
7,8) TENS lead wires ( with over 40 different lead wires in stock, we
can supply wires for most TENS stimulators) - available in 24", 26", 48"
and 60" lengths.
9) Snap adaptors (button & snap tye convertors)
10) Banana plug
11) Lead wire extender (pin to pin ).
Recharger Kit
Save money $$$$
If you use a TENS a lot, you may use many batteries, the price of which
can start to add up. For instance if you use just one 9V alkaline battery
a week ( which you can buy at most retail outlets for about $4.50 each),
over a year the total cost of batteries would be $234! Using Nickel
Cadmium batteries and recharging them with a recharger is much more cost
effective. A pair of Ni-Cad batteries should last a least a year ( the
manufacturers claim at least 1000 recharges under proper conditions). We
supply a 8.4V battery. When comparing prices please note that some companies
sell 7.2V which don't keep their charge as long. The 8.4V battery is better
value for money.
The DS-M9507 recharger also charges AAA and AA rechargeable batteries.
We sell the recharger kit consisting of the DS-M9507 recharger ($24.95)
and two 9V rechargeable batteries (2x$23.95) which can be bought separately
or as a kit:
$72.85 value for just $70.00
How to Use Adaptors
Electrode selection should not be limited to the style of lead wires that
accompany the TENS stimulator. As illustrated here, the variety of adaptors
address almost any application.
The 6" wire convertor also allows the snap electrode to be used with
pin-connector.
The clip adaptor will convert the lead wire pin connector to a clip
for use with a tab-style electrode.
The snap convertor converts the pin wire to a snap connection.
The button convertor also allows the snap electrode to be used with
a pin lead wire.
The bifurcating wire allows four electrodes to be used with standard
lead wires.
A lead wire extender adds additional length to lead wires for hard to
reach treatment sites.
